Fanny Lehmann (1A COMPETITION, MATH), Thesis Prize from the Technological Innovations in Nuclear Civil Engineering Conference
What is your academic background?
After two years of preparatory classes at Champollion High School in Grenoble, I joined the mathematics department of ENS Paris-Saclay in 2017.
I pursued the research track with internships in various themes related to modeling for environmental sciences in their broadest understanding: modeling electric batteries at CEA Grenoble, the link between temperature and mortality at INSERM. During my pre-doctoral research year, I worked on the influence of climate change on the water cycle at the University of Bristol. This year reinforced my desire to continue my studies in research, at the intersection of mathematical modeling and environmental applications.
However, I was not sure if I wanted to pursue academic research. Therefore, I chose a thesis in collaboration between the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) and the Laboratory of Mechanics Paris-Saclay (LMPS, a joint laboratory of Centrale Supélec and ENS Paris-Saclay). I am delighted to benefit from an academic environment at LMPS and a more operational one at CEA, providing varied and complementary insights into my research.
What are your professional prospects for the future?
I love the research I conduct while on my thesis, so I would like to continue in academic research. Currently, I am looking for a postdoctoral position abroad to experience a different context from France and broaden my research themes. I plan to return to hydrology, incorporating the artificial intelligence tools developed during my thesis. However, since I am always very curious, I might have a fondness for a completely different research proposal!
